A word from our director Jo Laugharne…

A Christmas Carol has been adapted for many theatre and film productions over the years.  Charles Dickens was a great fan of the theatre, but I don't believe he would have intended it to be any more than a novella to be read, even though his rich, literary descriptions of ghostly characters and dramatic events lend themselves well to adaptation for the stage.  Myf Laugharne has done a brilliant job in keeping very close to the original, adding a few ideas and one little twist at the end. Our show will run for an hour and a quarter, without an interval, with a great band enhancing the action with traditional carols. We have been given permission to hold our production in St Michael's, a wonderful performance space which will be true and even add to the atmosphere which Dickens originally created. We are extremely grateful to Father Jason and the Parochial Church Council for this fantastic opportunity.

The Church offers challenges too - you can't just bang a nail into this Grade 1 listed property if you want to hang a piece of scenery. So we are very lucky to have the experience of Loraine Fergusson as designer, Adam Stockley as lighting director and Peter Ritson and his brilliant construction team. These are the same people who were all able to transform this space into a wonderfully magical and beautiful Narnia in 2017, while leaving the structure of the building untouched.

Our aim is to create a Victorian London Christmas Eve which will surround the audience from the moment they enter the Church.  We may be a little early with our performance in late November, but we want to inject a little piece of Christmas spirit for everyone to take away with them, as Advent begins.
